Well made, but top water section is small – and a hint about the LEDs, October 3, 2015

I’m a long time user and fan of PUR filters. I bought my pitcher about 15 years ago and it’s still going strong. In fact, it still looks virtually brand new, and I use it every day. I think that I got their “platinum” model back then. I keep it in the fridge and fill up my pooch Niki’s main water dish with it a few times a day, so I’m filling the pitcher two or three times a day. Over the years, I’m guessing that I’ve purchased and used over 50 filters. I also used their faucet-mounted filters for years, but the assemblies would always end up leaking after a few months and required replacing too often for my tastes, so I stopped using them altogether. The pitcher, though, has always worked great.

I happen to like the taste of water from a PUR filter, which is why I continue to buy them. Part of it is habit, but I’ve tried other brands, and I keep coming back to PUR. To date, I can’t recall ever having a filter get clogged, but other folks clearly have given some of the reviews, and the fact that PUR includes prominent instructions in the box for how to unclog a filter. Given my experience over the years, though, I don’t expect to have any issues.

I was happy to give this newer model a try to see if they’re still making them as good as they used to. Quality-wise, I’d say that they are. All of the plastic pieces are well made and fit together nicely, and nothing comes across as being “cheap.” Design-wise, it’s decent, but there are some pros and cons for how I like to use these.

A pro is that they (probably years ago) got rid of a lower plastic shield inside the pitcher, and now it’s easier to get at the filter from the bottom to twist it when you want to replace it. Sometimes the filter gets stuck in mine and is tough to unscrew from the top, so I like that aspect of this one. Other pros are that the handle is comfortable to hold on to and pour, and it’s really easy to fill this under the sink (granted, I have a high neck faucet that makes it easier).

A con is that the upper reservoir on this is pretty small and you need to fill it up more than once to get the quantity of filtered water that they show in the product image. You don’t need to have that much filtered water in it, obviously, but I prefer a design that lets me pour in water and then set it in the fridge and be done. They could have easily made the top reservoir bigger and still had a good amount held underneath in the filtered section.

UPDATE: Here’s a hint about the LEDs. I followed my understanding of the instructions, and I thought that mine didn’t work. Turns out, the instructions are, at least, confusing. They say to hold down the reset button until all of the LEDs turn on, and then to let go of the button when the green LED blinks on its own. I’d hold down the button, but the three LEDs would turn on and then off, but the green one would never blink. Here’s the trick – hold down the button until all three turn on, and then let go _while_ they are all still on. At that point, the green one will blink, and the lights will blink after you pour water just like they should.

The LEDs are kind of handy, but you might be able to save some money and get the version without them. If you’ve never used a PUR item before, their pitcher filter replacements come with a handy filter life calendar in which you place a sticker over the top of circular calendar that will show you the day that you should replace the filter. You can stick that calendar on your pitcher, but I just put in on my fridge with a magnet – works great, and it’s an easy reminder. My point is that getting one of their slightly less expensive models without the LEDs might be a better way to go, but if the price is good on this one when you’re shopping, then they’re just an added features that you may or may not ever use.

So, in the end, I still like this pitcher. It’s well made, and the handle is comfortable to hold and use. I wish that they would have made the upper water reservoir a larger percentage of the total pitcher volume so that I could get more filtered water from a single refill, so it’s not five stars in my book (especially at the current ~$28 price point). It is, however, easily four stars.

My roommate and I live in the city with a building with no elevator. As such, we don’t have the space or ability to stock pile gallons of water and in an older apartment building, the water from the tap is never 100% clean. That’s why I was so happy to get my hands on this PUR filter. For the two of us, it’s the perfect size for everything from just drinking water to ice tea, though I imagine for a bigger family it may be too small. A filtered pitcher lasts us about a day, but it’s so quick to filter that it’s never an issue of running out.

The filtered water always comes out completely clear, and I can’t discern any tastes in it, which is good. The LED indicator is incredibly useful for knowing when to buy the new filter, as there’s no way I would be able to keep track of it otherwise before it stopped working. The handle has a comfortable grip, and because the pitcher isn’t too big, I never worry about it being too heavy to carry. Overall very happy with it

Good Drinking Water, Gimmicky LED, October 16, 2015

This PUR is a nice, compact filtration system that provides good tasting water. I prefer the slim size of this 7 cup tank as there are only two of us, and the filtering is pretty quick since it takes 2 fillings in the small reservoir area to get your 7 cups of filtered water.

It has a handy Filter Light, which alerts you to when the filter needs to be changed. I personally find the light to be gimmicky and unnecessary as it only monitors the amount of time you’ve been using the filter, which according to the manual is two months. Technically, to achieve best filter results, it is good up to 40 gallons. Since the LED light isn’t tracking the water poured, it’s just a quicker way to see when you’ll need replacing (Green = working, Yellow = Change soon, and Red = Change Now. You can easily just use a manual way as a reminder such as putting it in on your calendar for 2 months down the road.

If you drink a lot of water, remember the filter is for 40 gallons, which would be difficult to track, but should last be between 1 and 2 months, according to the directions. See the photo of the “Performance Data Sheet” for specific information of PUR’s claims.

Now, while I think this is a very good pitcher, I do have one problem with the quality which is why I knocked off one star: the small pop-up lid for you to put water in it came broken. I do have it put on to keep the hole covered, but touch it and it falls right into the reservoir. It’s not a huge negative as I can easily fill the pitcher quicker by removing the entire top, so it is still usable. Just a bit disappointed, but still provides good tasting water.
