Yum! Good coffee!, February 29, 2016

This brewer is unique. You can start with ground coffee, or you can start with beans. If you add beans, it will grind them and immediately brew from the grinder. How’s the coffee? It’s great, as I would expect from freshly ground coffee. Cleanup is not exactly effortless, but it’s not horrendous also. You need to disassemble the grinding area, which comes apart easily. Then rinse it off, which is the hardest part because the coffee sticks to the metal mesh in the grinder.

It took me a few cups before I got the measurement correctly. If you add too much coffee, some of the beans simply don’t get ground so of course they are wasted. Add too little and, not surprisingly, you get weak coffee. But once I got used to it, I like this a lot.

If you are one of those people who stagger out of bed every morning and need your cup of java fast and hot, this is probably not a great choice for you. It takes several minutes to grind and brew, and the coffee is not as hot as I would like. But that’s a minor beef, and this brewer has earned precious counter space in my kitchen, since I have a favorite local roaster whose coffee is not available in K-Cups.

Coffee by the cup without so much post-consumer waste, April 3, 2016

    PROS:
Makes a great cup of coffee
Grinds and brews coffee beans (clever grind and brew basket)
    Easy to use
    Easy to clean
Far less post consumer waste that K-cups or similar systems
Can be set up to make strong coffee

    CONS:
Cup holder attaches to higher height with flimsy, plastic nubs
There’s a bit of a learning curve until you figure out the proportions to get your coffee just right
Less suitable for an office environment than a K-cup machine

To kick off the review, I have to say that I was highly impressed at just how good a cup of coffee the Mr. Coffee Single Cup Coffeemaker with Built-In Grinder was able to make. Given that the device comes with a reusable filter, you will have far less post consumer waste than you would if you used disposable K-cups.

    UNBOXING
The coffee maker unit comes fully assembled in the box. As an extra bonus, you get a 20 ounce coffee mug. Both the unit and the coffee mug are mostly made of plastic, but are clad in stainless steel. In comparison to the Mr. Coffee unit, my Hamilton Beach Single Scoop coffee maker has more exposed stainless steel and has a more sturdy feel to it.

This is a one-cup coffee maker, but it is not particularly small. At 14-inches high, it will still be able to slide under back beneath your kitchen cabinets, which usually have about an 18-inch clearance. However it is not enough clearance to open the top so that you can fill the device with water or coffee beans. The cord extends 26″ from the coffee maker. This is pretty standard for kitchen counter-top devices, but I’d have preferred the cord to be a bit longer. The cord can be handily stored in the base of the machine.

Overall construction is pretty standard for a coffee machine in this price range. The fit and finish are quite good. The one issue was the removable drip tray/plate where your coffee cup rests. First, it has only two positions. Once to accommodate a 20 ounce travel mug (about an 8″ clearance) and a higher setting that can fit smaller cups (about a 5 inch clearance). Coffee mugs come in all shapes and sizes these days. For example, if you have a lower profile mug–say a standard, 6 ounce teacup–even at the high setting, there is too much distance causing some splashing. Second, the drip tray snaps into place at the higher setting using plastic nubs. These nubs are the same soft plastic material that the rest of the machine is made out of. I have a bad feeling about the durability of this and could imagine that over time the nubs will bend or snap off.

    MAKING COFFEE
Making coffee is pretty simple. You fill the coffee machine with water. (The maximum fill for this coffee maker is 2 1/2, eight ounce, cups.) You put the desired amount of beans in the reusable filter which doubles as the grinding basket. You press the grind button and that’s it. If you want to grind the coffee for a shorter time, you can hit the grind button a second time to stop. If you want to grind longer than the desired time, you can hold pressure on the grind button for the desired amount of time. In general, Mr. Coffee has gotten the grind just about right. (For purists, this is a blade grinder and not a burr grinder. But I wouldn’t have expected a burr grinding apparatus on a product in this price range.)

If you are using pre-ground coffee, you bypass the grinding step by pressing the brew-only button.

You need to make sure that you do not overfill the coffee machine. There is no way to set how much water you wish to dispense and the machine will boil through all the water you put in the reservoir. Basically, you fill the reservoir with the coffee mug you are using, thereby insuring that you will have the right amount of water. Some water is absorbed by the coffee grounds, so if you don’t need room for milk you may want to fill the machine with a tiny bit more water.

Once I got the proportions right, the machine brewed great tasting coffee. The manual has suggested amounts of grounds/beans to use per cup, but you may want to use more or less depending on the desired strength of coffee you want. (Oddly, the directions don’t make a differentiation between the amount of preground coffee vs. beans that you would need to use. Clearly, there is whole lot more coffee in a tablespoon of ground coffee than in a tablespoon of unground beans.)

One of the complaints that I’ve had with the conventional K-cup system is that it tends to make coffee on the weaker side. (The newer systems do add some flexibility in this department.) I have a Hamilton Beach Scoop coffee maker that has similar problems unless I grind the beans finely and use a dark roast. This machine has a generous brew basket and can accommodate enough coffee to make a stronger cup, which I appreciate.

Mr. Coffee has made the unit very easy to clean…

The Mr. Coffee single cup grinder/brewer is a fresh Idea for brewing a fresh cup of coffee….. and I couldn’t wait to try it out.
The machine is basic, straight forward & simple to use, I cleaned it out first…. then had a freshly ground & brewed cup of coffee in a matter of minutes…. and it was great!
Wow! nothing like the smell of freshly ground coffee beans in the morning… this is really going to be nice 🙂
The Coffee maker comes with a big stainless steel mug, and it holds ALLOT!
It will take some practice to find the perfect bean/water ratio but most every machine has it’s own learning curve of sorts.
Unwanted additives are in almost everything we consume today, [like sawdust!] even ground coffee…. grinding your own means you are ingesting nothing but clean, pure coffee bean….
it just doesn’t get any better.
Cleaning is a snap, because everything that needs cleaning pops out & back in quick & easy, sure, it takes a few minutes to clean everything properly… but it really is not a big bother.
The whole grinding/brewing & cleaning process takes a bit longer than some of the single cup quick brewers out there…. and it does not seem to get “piping hot”, but still….. a big mug of fresh brewed beans just does not get any quicker or easier than this.
The Mr. Coffee BVMC is a welcome addition to my line up of kitchen appliances, If fast & fresh is how you like your coffee, check out this grinder/brewer machine… 4 stars
