Beware: interior paint peels after 2 years, class action suit pending + UPDATE, April 23, 2014
    By
Displaced Minnesotan (Chevy Chase, MD United States) –

This review is from: GE PEM31SFSS Profile Stainless Steel Countertop Microwave (Kitchen)
I (along with many other irate owners) have found that after about 2 years, the white interior paint on the ceiling of these GE microwaves starts peeling off….and falling into the family food.

For details on the class action suit, which explains the problem, see Seeger Weiss, the law firm investigating the class action: “GE Microwave Units’ Interior Paint Peeling Poses Health Concerns” at […]

Our experience: This is our 3rd GE 1.1 Cu. Ft. Microwave in 8 years. After investigating the problem online, we tried repainting the bare spots with special “Microwave Cavity Paint” spray paint. This lasted about 6 months before the paint on other, unrepainted areas began flaking off.

The GE Microwave paint peeling problem is extremely common — you can find 100’s of complaints online. Outrageously, GE has known about it for years, but apparently has dismissed it as a purely “cosmetic” problem, therefore not covered under their warranty. Their website claims the paint is non-toxic, and therefore “ingestion of small amounts of the peeling coating [i.e. paint] does not create a health risk.” (direct quote from their FAQ. See […].

Such arrogance! One has to wonder: Do GE execs feed peeling paint to their own children? Or only say it’s healthy for the children of their customers?

I’ve complained to GE, and received a (impressively) prompt response requesting details and photos, so perhaps they will replace it I’ll revise this review after I see the outcome from GE.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to find a replacement from another manufacturer, but it is difficult to find the exact dimensions to fit our built-in cabinetry. If anybody finds a substitute the same size, I would appreciate hearing about it.

UPDATE 1-26-15 A bit of good news to add to this sordid tale. I contacted GE via their Facebook page, and received a reply from a customer service rep that services GE’s “Social Media.” Suddenly, they were more forthcoming. Seems like their Social Media team is an outfit whose mission is to protect the brand’s reputation from vocal, disgruntled customers. They offered me a $200 “Goodwill Coupon” (like a rebate) to purchase a new microwave. To avoid extensive cabinetry work, bought the latest version of the same model (PEM31-DF1BB) from Amazon Warehouse (open box) for $252 (incl tax). We still had to pay a cabinetmaker to change the shelving, because this newer version is slightly taller and deeper than the older one.

Lesson learned: GE will be far more responsive to anybody they fear will makes a stink on social media, than to ordinary phone/email/website complaints.

You can buy a good GE counter top microwave for $100-$150 but this model cost $359 only because GE advertises it as a space saver Profile series. Most microwaves measure 15″-16″ deep but this model is 12″ deep. So, with much hesitation I spent the extra money because of my current kitchen design and the look I was trying to accomplish. My kitchen came with a microwave shelf in the upper 12″ x 30″ cabinet. I also bought the 30″ trim kit so I could get the built in look. The trim kit only has 4 parts but I must warn you it doesn’t install as easy as it looks. If you’re going for a built in design I suggest you have an extra person around to help with the plug and to guide sliding the microwave on to the track. The one CON I found is that YES the microwave measures 12″ deep, the bottom plate for the trim kit and the tracks are also 12″ but that does not account for the part of the microwave that protrudes out of the back and the protective rubber on the electrical cord that also protrudes out of the back. The over all tip to tip is more like 13 1/2″. So to get the built in look I wanted in a 12″ cabinet we had to cut out the back of the cabinet getting an extra 1/2″, and recess the electrical outlet 1/4″. The microwaves actually sit into the front of the trim kit about 3/4″ so that makes up the difference. The trim kit was also very expensive ($149) but it gives the built in look I was going for plus it hides any alterations that you do to the back of the cabinet. It looks amazing and I’m so glad I did it. Oh yeah, it functions like your average microwave.

Working well but take care if replacing an older built-in model, April 16, 2014

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: GE PEM31SFSS Profile Stainless Steel Countertop Microwave (Kitchen)
Our old microwave (RIP) was built into a certain size space, so we had no choice but to buy this model to replace it. I wasn’t looking for crazy bells and whistles – just a microwave that consistently does what it is supposed to do. So far so good with this model! If you are looking to replace your older model with this one, read on.

Installation: yes, the dimensions are BASICALLY the same – close enough to fit into our existing space. However, the mounting holes are not in the same place (of course), which made for some re-drilling of holes. After a little trial and error 🙁 we got them in the right place. The larger problem is that the spot where the cord attaches to the microwave is MUCH deeper than the older model. Therefore we could not initially position the microwave flush with our cabinets (as our last micro had been). We had to cut a small hole in the back of the cabinet and drywall in order to accommodate the depth of the cord attachment. But we eventually got it into position securely, in the same space as our last micro, and then we push the button to open the door. Surprise! The door hinge design is not the same as the old micro and while the door does open, it only opens about a quarter of the way, doesn’t open the whole way without a push – it rubs against the cabinet on the left. At this point, seeing as we had no other options, we decided to live with it. Surprisingly we are getting used to pushing the door open by hand.

Use: works great, just like its supposed to do. It is VERY quiet, which was a nice surprise. Heats foods more quickly and evenly than our old model for sure (again, what its supposed to do IMHO). But it sure gets messy looking rather quickly, as the finish shows every single fingerprint, on the touchpad and the door.

Because of the difficult install and the finish that shows EVERYTHING, I’m giving it 3 stars. If I were to rate on the use alone, I’d give it 4 stars.
