Perfect fit for my 1989 Briggs & Stratton engine, June 29, 2013

I bought this for a mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine, model type 93902 (i.e., the 93900 series). The air cleaner element specified in the manual and parts list for my mower engine is 272235 (without the S at the end; I think the S indicates a newer version of the same part, as there are other Briggs & Stratton parts with S on the end, e.g., for my riding mower, that are identical in size, shape and function to parts I used before the S was tacked on). It fits perfect, but the reason I’m writing this is to say how I got the manual, just in case it might be useful to someone.

You can search for manuals and parts, etc., on the Briggs & Stratton site but not everything is listed. So when I couldn’t find my mower engine listed I called Briggs & Stratton, got someone on the line within a few minutes (a bit of a wait but worth it), who took down the engine model, type and code numbers from me. So if you call regarding a Briggs & Stratton engine, have the whole long model/type/code number ready to give them (the one on the engine in question is 19 digits long; I took a photo of the number to make it easier, especially as I wasn’t certain what one of the digits was until I zoomed in on the photo). I was curious when the engine was built, and the gal informed me that the last set of digits (the code) which on my engine begins with the numbers 8910 indicates that it was built in October, 1989. No wonder it’s all metal parts and works better than a mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine that I bought new just a few years ago (which is now in the shop and may not even be worth repairing).

Anyway, she emailed me the manual in pdf format and in a separate email the parts list (though I had been able to find the parts diagram online elsewhere than the Briggs & Stratton site, but not the manual).

Before putting the new element in, I ran the mower out of gas then drained the old oil by tilting the mower (which is the method recommended in the manual, though there is a drain plug below the engine near the blade). I then put on a surgical glove so I could squeeze the oil from the element after I soaked it in oil (I soaked an element for my riding mower at the same time), I wrapped it in a towel and squeezed it some more, then put the new, freshly oiled element in the air cleaner body. I saw the same element selling for several dollars more than what I paid Amazon at a local home improvement outlet. In the same store I saw replacement air filter bodies that came with elements for close to what the store sells just the element for, but the air filter body on my mower engine not only does not need replacing, it’s metal whereas the Briggs & Stratton branded replacement air filter body is made of plastic.

Anyway, call Briggs & Stratton’s toll-free number if you have questions about your mower engine and parts, be patient till someone comes on the line, and have the engine model/type/code number ready. The gal asked me if she could email me the manual and parts list, and I’m guessing that if I said no she would’ve offered to snail mail them to me (perhaps at a cost? – I didn’t ask so don’t know, but getting them via email cost me nothing).

Great, great, great! I wish I could give you more information about this product but it does exactly as it should in getting your mower running. Add a spark plug to this, change the oil, clean your carburetor, and you’ll be saving about $50 in labor at the local small engine shop. It will take you between 10 and 20 minutes to keep your mower going strong year after year. Its up to you if you want to sharpen the blade yourself. With the low prices on blades at your local hardware store you can skip the time sharpening and use it to play more video games… or spend time with your significant other. Whatever gets you there. Great product, good price, excellent shipping. Thanks Amazon.

same as the original, but without the original packaging. in other words, you will not get instructions, or any other info. came in a sealed plastic bag which did not provide any support or protection. also, seems just a bit wider on the sides from original, but shouldn’t impact performance. have not yet used it, but don’t anticipate any issues with it. compared w/ price found at Lowes or HD, these can’t be beat.
