Great griddle for the backyard cook, June 21, 2014
David W. (Elk Grove, CA) –

This review is from: Blackstone 36 Inch Outdoor Propane Gas Grill Griddle Cooking Station (Lawn & Patio)

I don’t know about you folks, but I’m not a huge fan of char-grilled food. Let’s just say that growing up, my family members seemed to spend more time drinking beer rather than focusing on what they were cooking on the old Weber. Who likes a burnt burger? NOT ME! When it comes to food, such as burgers, breakfast, tacos, etc. – I love them to come from a flat top. I had been researching purchasing a legitimate commercial kitchen griddle, such as one from Vulcan. There are advantages to do this (stainless, thick griddle plates, thermostatic controls if desired, and there are some great deals on used commercial kitchen equipment out there. With that said, it just seemed a bit overkill at this point in time.

I started looking at the Blackstone and noticed they had updated the model since I had looked at it last. I read a lot of good reviews on the 1554 Griddle and decided to order one since it was a fraction of the price of the Vulcan griddle I was looking at, plus it was portable and fueled by LPG.

Straight forward if you can use basic hand tools. It took me about 15 minutes to assemble the griddle by myself but I’m a very mechanically inclined guy. I would say even if you’ve hardly ever handled a screwdriver, it shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes to assemble. Everything fit together without any issues and I found no defects in the construction.

Very mobile with decent wheels. The only issue is that it makes it difficult to level.

You can break it down and fold it up for transportation in less than 10 minutes. Is it the easiest thing in the world to do? No. However it’s certainly feasible if you want to take it camping or to a friends house a few times a year.

The construction is solid and adequate for the backyard cook. It doesn’t feel unstable or flimsy. Will it last 20 years? Probably not, but then again for the price I don’t think that would be realistic expectation.

    Heat Distribution:

This is a highly important item for me. I’ve done some testing with an IR thermometer to check the heat distribution. It’s fairly even between each burner, however the left and right edges are cooler than the center for obvious reasons. I find that this is an advantage, since you can move items to the outside edges to reduce the cooking speed while other items are finished up. With four burners, you can also have a hot and cool side on the griddle. It does vent heat around the full perimeter of the griddle, which means you’re going to get warmed up a bit while cooking. In comparison, the 24″ griddle on my Camp Chef outdoor stove blocks the heat from leaving the front, so it’s a little cooler for the cook to use. Not a big deal and if it’s cold, this becomes an advantage.

It’s plenty big to cook for the average family get-together. You can also use a section of the griddle for smaller cooks, though some of the hit will wick away due to the rest of the griddle acting like a heatsink.

    Grease Management:

If this griddle has a glaring oversight, it’s in grease management. Had they installed leveling legs on the griddle base to the burner assembly, it would have allowed some precision leveling. That doesn’t exist, though you can shim the griddle slightly with washers sized to go around the pins which sit within the burner assembly. The main issue here is the shallow grease trough and the poorly designed drip hole/grease tray. For a griddle this size, the grease tray is small. It’s also a pretty bad design, since thinner grease/oil will find a way to miss the grease tray at random times. That can create quite a mess on whatever surface your griddle is sitting on. Had they installed a nipple to better direct the grease flow, it would have helped considerably. In addition the trough is very shallow, so caution must be used to prevent spillage. This is even more of an issue if the griddle isn’t perfectly level.

I’ll be using my fabrication skills to modify the grease tray and also the griddle itself so that a small nipple is installed to direct the grease flow downwards.

Considering the rest of the griddle is pretty well designed, this is the one area in my opinion where they fell short.

It’s a great piece of cooking equipment. Even temps, heavy griddle, pre-seasoned, solid construction, great capacity and a price which is very reasonable for the capabilities it adds to your “cooking toolbox” at home. I’ve made some really good food on this griddle already and it will be something I use for years to come. I’d buy it again without hesitation.

Get some liquid butter, such as Phase Oil Liquid Butter Alternative sold here on Amazon. It works great for cooking most foods on the griddle. Also…

Awesome griddle! HUGE, July 6, 2013
    K. Christensen (Rock Springs, WY USA) –

I don’t know what the other reviewers are talking about when they are upset that the griddle didn’t come assembled. Really? You think they ship this thing in a box with its legs already on?

Anyway, as far as the griddle goes, it’s awesome. It took me about an hour to season it for the first time. I rubbed on some shortening and put the burners on full blast (as directed). The oil/shortening helps give it the nice “grandma’s cast iron” color and helps to provide a non-stick surface. The initial coloration of the grill is kind of greenish (I added some pictures above) but as you season the grill with the oil and scrape around on the top of the griddle during the seasoning process, all of that goes away and the nice dark black color comes through. This griddle is HUGE! Again look at the pictures that I’ve added and you’ll see that even with 18 burgers and a couple dozen dogs, I’ve still got PLENTY of room left.

I love the griddle and would highly recommend to anyone.

    Happy Grilling!!

Great Grill, fun to cook on, very versatile!, May 25, 2014
    Jim from Ky. (Kentucky) –

This review is from: Blackstone 36 Inch Outdoor Propane Gas Grill Griddle Cooking Station (Lawn & Patio)
This is an awesome grill/griddle, and a great value. While I bought it at Lowes, cheaper and had a gift card, I want to pass on a review here as well.

It’s very large, so large that you can cook multiple things at different temps at the same time. I use a heat laser gun to check the temps on each area. I suggest you get one of these as it helps tremendously.

I’ll do the pro and con list, it seems easier.

Seasoning the cook top. I read a few recommendations here, but, the easiest way, is heat it up full temp, let it cook 20 minutes or so, then turn it off and scrape it. Then, do it again, and throw some greasy burgers or bacon on it. It’ll take a few times cooking to get it perfect, but, it’s fine after the first time or two.

This will use a little more propane than a normal grill. I get about 1/4 less time and use from a tank. This is just my experience. Tank is easy to access. The tank hanger appears flimsy, but, so far it’s fine.

Pros: 1. good temp control 2. very sturdy 3. easy to clean with the right tools. heats up quickly, and cools down as quickly to keep temp adjusted. 4. Last but not least, it is fun to cook on. 5. buy one, you’ll love it if you like to cook with restaurant style equipment.

    1. Clean up is easy, but a little messy at times. I use a commercial griddle pad. A little water, medium temp, cleans up fine. Just be careful not to overload the drain trough as it’s small.

    2. Drain trough. I leveled my griddle, so you must scrape the grease to the trough. It doesn’t drain well to the drain cup, it’ll need some help. Use your spatula to push the liquid to the drain, just be careful and go slow, as it will quickly overflow onto your shoes or bare feed. It would be nice if it were deeper.

    3. Drain hole. This hole, while adequate in circumference, is simply punched into the steel. The water and grease will “kickback” when running through the hole, and will spill onto you or the deck or porch, instead of the drain cup. You can get a grinder stone on your Dremel tool, and grind a groove to help, but it’ll take some work, and testing, to get it right. I simply used a trick I saw on the Moonshiners TV show. Simply find a twig from a plant or tree, bend it in a “V” shape, and insert it, tip down, through the hole about halfway. The liquid will then hit the twig, and follow it straight down into the cup. Simple and quick, and no grinding.

    4. Heat: The unit expels the residual heat all around the griddle, particularly the sides. Putting plastic items next to the griddle while you cook, could result in them melting. Be careful. Heat also exits the back and front of the unit. You’ll notice this quickly if you stand too close. I am going to try to construct some type of shield around the unit, to expel the heat upward. They listed a splatter shield for this model, but after contacting the company, they said they discontinued it as it became very hot during use. They said they are working on a better setup.

    5. While portable, it’s a very heavy unit. I remove the griddle top, which just lifts off, and separate them. We rarely pack it up though.

Everything said, I’d buy it again, and may buy the smaller one for my kids. Nothing is perfect, but this is as good as it gets for the price, value, and durability.
