Seems to be a pretty good station; a few niggles though., May 18, 2015

I’ve had this about a week now — and so far, so good. It’s sending the signal to the monitor and bridge just fine. I’ve got it set up with AcuLink and Weather Underground. I don’t have any way of really knowing how accurate it is, but I think it’s close enough. I particularly like the rain gauge since I grow a vegetable garden in my suburban yard.

I found the variety of products and descriptions a little hard to follow, so I’ll describe what this package does in case any one is confused: The white sensor goes outside and measures wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, barometric pressure and temperature. The screen (inside) reads/displays info from the outdoor sensor every few seconds plus gives you indoor temperature and humidity. It stores historical readings, has a ‘weather ticker’ which scrolls through a series of readings (like month-to-date rainfall, high temperature this week, etc.), and gives a ‘forecast’ based on rising or falling barometric pressure. The third piece is the internet bridge. It hooks directly to your internet modem with a cable, and reads information from the OUTDOOR sensor and pushes it to the internet about every 15 minutes. There you can view it on the AcuLink or Weather Underground (my preference) web sites. Weather Underground requires you to set up a free account and register your weather station. You’ll show up on their site along with thousands of other personal weather stations. Pretty cool.Weather underground has an iPad-only app called WunderStation that is very nice.

    A few specific points:
    1) The package didn’t include the full manual for the internet bridge, just the quick start guide. The quick start guide wasn’t as specific as needed to get the bridge running smoothly. The full manual, which I downloaded after a frustrating hour of trying to get set up, made clear that the bridge would need up to a half hour to update software and another 10 minutes before the signal would be picked up by AcuLink. The full manual should be included, and the quick start guide could be written better.
    2) The monitor is larger than it needs to be in my opinion. It’s almost too big to put on a desk or small table. Also, it’s illuminated all the time. Might be able to change that — I’ll have to investigate. It’s LCD with a color background. It’s hard to read unless you’re at just the right angle, the color template makes that worse. I really would rather have a good old black and white monitor about half the size of this one.
    3) The update rate to AcuLink and Weather Underground is every 15 minutes. That just seems to be too slow for this real time world we live in. What are we waiting for?
    4) The AcuLink website is serving its purpose, but it’s a leetle bit primitive looking. Also, it would be nice if historical data stored and accessible. I can get it on Wunderground though. [Edited 6/9/2015 to add: Data is available from AcuLink, just not real obvious how to do it. Select ‘chart’ and then ‘save’. The data downloads into an Excel file.]
    5) The short, stubby mounting bracket isn’t very well designed. After noodling it over for a while, I threw the bracket in the trash, headed to Home Depot and bought a 10 foot length of 3/4 inch electrical conduit which I fastened to a fence post with conduit straps and nails. Cost was less than $10.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY!, May 23, 2015

UPDATE 8.5.15….. WELL STARTED OUT OK, THEN THE BRIDGE WENT BAD, THEY REPLACED THAT, AND NO IT SEEMS THE COOLING FAN IS NOT WORKING TO KEEP THE TEMPERATURE READINGS RIGHT, THIS UNIT IS NOT WORTH WASTING $178 ON, TOTALLY PISSED I BOUGHT THIS NOW
Very fast delivery, very very easy to setup, clear cut easy to read instructions, don’t get confused like I did at first thinking the solar panels are there to recharge the units batteries, they are actually there to run the cooling fans and the unit during the day to save on battery life, they state that the Lithium Batteries will last up to 2 years, and make sure you do use Lithium Batteries for the outside unit to make sure it keeps running in very cold weather, regular batteries start to fail when temps get to 40 degrees and less, one last note, the rapid blue flashing lights on the bridge is normal, the instructions kinda make it out that it is something your suppose to do when your suppose press the register button on the bottom of the bridge, no software for needed for the PC, it’s all web based and looks and works very nicely, disappointed there is no app for Windows Phone only Android and IPhone apps, I mounted my outside unit on a 12′ 4×4 extreme weather pressure treated post, the hardest part was digging the hole in this freaking rock hard red clay dirt here in Virginia, UP AND RUNNING WITH EASE TO WEATHERWUNDERGROUND….

Nice Amateur Weather Station, June 17, 2015

I have had my station up and running for just over one month. As stated by others, go online and download and read the full manuals before you get started. I immediately added my station to Weather Underground. It is true that AcuRite only sends data the Wunderground every 15 minutes, but the data from the bridge is available on the AcuLink “mybackyardweather.com” site in real time, but it only updates the web page every 5 minutes. There is a refresh icon at the top right of the page that you can click for up-to-the-second information.

The indoor display is very nice, but the forecast feature is useless in my location. It has predicted rain many days for the past month. (It only rained once.) I waited for the learning period of 12 days, but it still doesn’t predict well. Not really a big deal.

This station has been very reliable. I have the bridge inside the house about 100 feet from the station. At that distance, you don’t want many obstructions, so make sure you have an outside wall near a window for a better signal. My location is line of sight with only a window between the station and the bridge, and I still only get two of four bars.

The AcuLink site is very cool, but again, the forecast feature is useless. All of the other bits of information seem accurate. The data is stored, so it is easy to create historical charts.

With the bridge, I have the option of adding more sensors. This would be useful for someone with a wine cellar or other location where temperature and humidity are important. You can set alarms one the AcuLink site to notify you of all sorts of weather information, like high wind, high and low temps, rainfall rate, etc.

One clarification regarding the app. There is an Android app as well as iPhone. I prefer the full web site to the app, however.

Update: 9/7/2015 I’ve been getting regular alerts from wundrground that my station is down, and then back up a couple of hours later. Today it was down on the acu-link sight (mybackyardweather), but my bridge showed a signal and my counter-top display showed all was well. I changed the batteries in the 5-in-1 station and the wind and rain sensors came back up. Finally, I moved the bridge 6 inches to the window ledge and everything came back up. As mentioned earlier, my bridge is only 100 feet line-of-sight to the outdoor station. The moral of the story, don’t believe the claim of 100 meters reception distance.
